Available in countertop and hood combinations, microwaves are no longer simply for defrosting and heating. Now capable of cooking in four different ways–grilling, baking, steam, and convection–microwaves have become an important kitchen tool for every level of cook. Microwaves can produce the same flavorful, juicy results as a traditional convection oven, and Whirlpool Corporation research* shows that nearly 60% of people use their microwave on a daily basis.
With such active use, there are plenty of opportunities for spills and splashes to coat the interior. It is important to clean any residue off the walls, turntables or bottom, or it may alter the smell and taste of future foods prepared or heated in the microwave. This residue can even affect the smell of the kitchen! Here are some helpful tips to get the process started:
- If you have a microwave with non-stick interior coatings, it will make daily clean up faster and easier. These non-stick interiors do not require special wipes r cleaners for the microwave oven’s interior, an especially helpful feature if your microwave gets a lot of daily use or if you have children using the oven.
- Grease filters can be removed for easy cleaning. Dishwasher-safe filters are also available on some models to make daily maintenance easier. They also help keep your kitchen clean from grease and odors, and smelling fresher.
- To clean the filter, it is simply removed from the hood, washed in the dishwasher and then reinstalled.
- Most microwave models also include a dishwasher-safe, removable turntable for easy cleaning and maintenance.
- Evelyn’s eco-friendly tip: Prevent soils from building up in the microwave by cleaning the microwave once a week. Simply boil a cup of water in the microwave for two to three minutes, wiping out any residue. Additionally, Evelyn suggests using the dishwasher to keep the turntable spotless.
